Why a motorbike is the best way to explore Phuket
Phuket is bigger and more diverse than many people expect. Beaches, viewpoints, jungle roads, and local neighborhoods are often spread out — and traffic can be unpredictable.
A motorbike gives you:
- freedom
- avoid traffic
- easy parking
- access to viewpoints and beaches cars often skip
Choosing the right motorbike for rent in Phuket
Not every rider needs the same bike, and bigger is not always better.
125–160cc engine - A solid choice for everyday riding around Phuket. Suitable for two riders, easy to handle, fuel-efficient.
300–350cc engine - Ideal if you plan to explore more of the island, ride through hillier areas, or carry a passenger frequently. These bikes offer better stability and power.
560–750cc engine - Best for experienced riders only. Phuket has amazing routes for bigger bikes, but they require confidence, good road awareness, and respect for changing conditions.
What to check before renting a motorbike
This is advice I give everyone.
Always check the motorbike carefully before renting it:
- test the brakes
- check tire condition
- make sure lights and indicators work
- inspect the helmet quality
Take photos or a short video at pickup. It takes two minutes and can save you a lot of stress later!
Legal requirements and safety on Phuket
Phuket is stricter than many other places in Thailand when it comes to checks.
- An International Driving Permit (IDP) is officially required
- Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger
- Police checkpoints are common in tourist areas
Following the rules doesn’t just protect you from 1000 THB fine, it protects you from serious problems if something goes wrong.

When a motorbike might not be the right choice
Honest advice!
If you feel unsure about riding, have no prior experience, or plan to ride mostly at night or in heavy rain, a car might be a safer option. Phuket will still be beautiful!
